Expansion to Calgary

Our passion is paint.
PrimeX Painting founder Frank Legacy began his love affair with the painting trade at age 16 when he painted a local high school with his father in his hometown of Campbellton, New Brunswick.
In the summer of 2001, he established his painting company in Moncton following his graduation from Dalhousie University. He thought it would be a great way to combine his business and painting skills.
That first summer job, although starting with no crew, no tools and no vehicle, was enormously successful. It steadily grew into a company with several employees, enjoying annual sales of roughly 1/2 million.
Frank credits his company’s success to providing a timely, consistent product, delivered by an organized and well-trained team. PrimeX employees are great people who share the founder’s passion for paint.
PrimeX serves both commercial and residential customers with proficiency, courtesy and professionalism. They work in all forms of residential re-paint (both interior and exterior), new construction and other unique buildings with specialized needs, such as churches.
Now celebrating 10 years in business, the company recently expanded its services to Calgary, Alberta, an exciting city that provides plenty of new opportunities for team members to work and play.
PrimeX prides itself on building and maintaining friendly relationships with its clients in Moncton and looks forward to building new ones in the great city of Calgary and beyond.

Have you met Maggie Brown?

Not all companies can boast having a Corporate Mascot...But just like Youppi, the Philly Phanatic and the San Diego Chicken, Maggie Brown is the talk to the town. She exemplifies what the company stands for and takes her role very seriously. As she begins her reign as Corporate Mascot, Maggie has many tasks, most notably Public Relations. Maggie acts as the liaison between PrimeX management and it's customer base. Having met almost all PrimeX clients, Maggie can rest assured that clients, along with their children, have a link to PrimeX's brass.

<input src="/uploads/Image/Maggie_July%2007%20009_edited.jpg" height="480" width="327" />

Being the business woman that she is, Maggie doesn't have much time for much after hours socializing. But here are some of her favorite activities.

She enjoys long walks in the woods (the beach is ok, but her nose gets full of sand and that can be annoying).

Her favorite sports involve the likes of Catch and Fetch. Two very distinct activities according to Maggie. One involves great mouth to ball coordination, the other, speed and stamina.

Her favourite Television shows are 'Cesar Millan - Dog Whisperer' and pretty much anything on 'Animal Planet'. But, her true love is for 'House'. She can't get enough of his sarcastic ways and cunning personality.

Her taste in men is a where Maggie gets a little weak in the legs (sorry, no knees), she has a certain weakness for tall, handsome men.

So, what does Maggie do on a day to day basis you may wonder. Well, for starters, Maggie is dedicated to her life at home and taking care of her toys, a major priority of hers. Maggie only works half days in order to satisfy these priorities. She usually gets up fairly early to make sure she's had time for outside duties and a bit of time with the likes of Fluffy, Honey, Squeaky and Kong Wooba. Afterwards, she gets into the truck and gets going to meet prospective clients. Sometimes even stopping for a complimentary TimBit at her local Tim's. But for the most part, Maggie is a Starbucks girl. She describes the Choco-Banana bread as, To Die For. Not free though.

Afterwards, she usually stops off at a park for a late morning break, runs after a few balls and then retires to her plush basket for an afternoon of siesta. Her nightlife usually involves planning for the day ahead, but she sure enjoys impromptu visits from friends and clients. Uncontrollable tail wagging and some well mannered barking are usually signs of excitement.

Well, that quickly sums up Maggie Brown. For more information, you can ask her yourself through her own email address.

maggie@primeXpainting.com

She answers every one!

Painting of Vinyl Siding

After a conversation with a friend last night, I came to a stark realization about the painting of Vinyl Siding. Here's the realization, most people think they are doomed to replacing the entire product when they (1) don't like the colour anymore (2) feel the product is faded or (3) just think it's time for a change. You CAN paint this stuff, and not only can you paint it, it's actually a perfect surface to paint. The design of the surface (etched patterns) and the product (Vinyl) are both very conducive to allowing paint to bond extremely well, with little to no chance of it ever peeling. The bonus part is, it costs around 30-40% of total replacement cost. So, how do you do it, and what do you use. Here's a free lesson on the painting of Vinyl siding.

First, and most importantly, you need to wash the surface clean of all residue. Not only is dirt a factor here, but chalk is also. If you happen to run your hand on the surface of older vinyl siding, you'll notice a powdery residue on it. This is a result of the pigment in the surface failing over the years. It's important to get as much of this stuff off as possible before applying any paint. The easiest way to do this is with a high pressure washer. Preferably over 2500 psi. A solution to be used to wash the surface is commonly TSP, Bleach and detergent (dish soap). The TSP and bleach will act as harsh cleaners to get the dirt, grime, mildew and chalkiness off. The detergent basically serves the purpose of creating soap suds to allow the cleaner to be a little frothier to hold on to the surface. Once you have applied this and before the sun dries it completely, a pressure washer should be used to power rinse it all off. This should be done slowly to make sure to wash as many areas as possible. After the cleaning is done, a 100% acrylic latex paint should be used to paint all vinyl areas. An important thing to note is the colour you are thinking of using cannot be darker than the colour of the existing siding. The siding is only rated for a certain amount of UV exposure and if you darken the colour, it will attract more UV rays and buckle the siding under the more intense heat. Talking to a paint supplier directly will help you understand your options. Once this is decided, apply two coats in the shade (avoiding direct sunlight to slow drying times) and enjoy your new found siding. Your neighbours won't know the difference between painting and replacing. Unless they watched you do it.

If you don't want to leave your colour selection and the ultimate faith of your house to a big box store, call us, we'll help you along.

The staff of 6 workers were right on budget at the 10 Day mark. Despite the freezing conditions (wind chill factors of -45 C), we were able to achieve our goal of painting the entire Church in 10 days. Of course, weather has little to do with interior painting projects, but we like to think we braved the elements to achieve our mission. As you can see from before and after pictures on our website http://www.primeXpainting.com, the Church started out being a combination of blue and white. Not the warmest of colour schemes. The resulting colours, as seen below, may seem familiar to those browsing through our picture gallery. These colours were borrowed from the St-Augustine's Colour scheme done 3 years ago. It certainly made St-Augustine's a warmer, more welcome envirnonment and from first impressions, St-Thomas has achieved the same results. In the end, close to 200 gallons of paint were applied to the walls and ceilings with in excess of 30,000 square feet of plastic used to cover lights, pews, floors, fans, etc...This was a great experience enjoyed by all. Thanks to the wonderful people of Campbellton for the hospitality while we were there. We look forward to hearing all the great remarks over the next few months.

Selecting Paint Colours :-(

One of the most common questions I face when doing consultations with clients is the one about colours. The underlying question is always the same: “Did I pick a nice colour? Do you think they work?”
Well here is the answer to this question for everyone. It never matters what colour you chose. That’s right, it doesn’t matter. What matters are the accessories you have to go with these colours. The accessories are what bring out the colour in the wall. Therefore, you can have the most common colour used in the world, but if your accessories are geared towards a different colour, it will look bad. Here is an example that I think will stand as a great indicator forever. I had a client paint her living room and family room in a bright turquoise and purple (and I mean purple, very Barney like). When we put the paint on, I remember the builder and the workers around the area saying “Wow, that’s a horrible colour for a nice house like this.” This remained the opinion for the remainder of the construction period. Although, once we finished the painting and the client moved in the furniture, everyone changed their opinions. All the furniture was white leather, with a large white mantle around the fireplace, the artwork on the walls all contained subtle hints of the wall colours and the whole thing “Just Worked”.
All of this to say, the question of “is it a nice colour?” has no backing…it’s all about the accessories.
Hint to Husbands: If you’ve paid attention while reading the above comments, you’ll have figured out something really important…Changing a paint colour is not costly, changing the accessories around it, could be significant…Keep your chin up!
New Construction Procedures

Over the years, we have found it inefficient for a crew of our workers to efficiently produce multiple New Construction Paint jobs from start to finish. Although easily accomplished, we have found that multiple crews, with multiple specialties are able to produce jobs quicker and more efficiently with better end results. Over the last year, we have begun to train our teams in specific roles to better aid our builders accomplish tight deadlines and still produce a quality product. Here is a brief summary of what our teams do and how they do it:

Preparation Crew: This is a very important stage of the work as the skeleton of the project is created. The crew always begins with making sure the site is clean and free of dust. We then spray all primer, sand all walls and prepare for the spraying of the trim, doors and closets. After all this is done, the prep crew will remove all tape from hinges and plastic from windows, make sure all the walls are sanded and leave the area clean for the 1st coat crew to come and paint.

First Coat crew: Although the job of the first coat crew is, like the name says, they still take responsibility for checking over the areas done by the prep crew. A second set of eyes looking over the job helps make sure fewer mistakes are made. When really dark colours are used, the crew will place two coats on areas that they feel will require a third coat at the finish stage.

Stair crew: This crew is responsible for staining and varnishing of the stair systems. Staining is only required when the stairs are to match the colour of the hardwood (which has been stained). Once this is done, the varnishing can begin, we use one of two systems to get our three coats of varnish on. A spray application of a lacquer based product for the first two coats, with one coat by hand done after all the painting has been done, to ensure that no scratches or damage has been done to the stairs and also to ensure that no dust is stirred up during the final application. The second system has the crew apply three coats of the finish product by hand. This takes more time, but is sometimes easier to schedule around other trades.

Second coat crew: This is the most important stage as it will be the last team to have a part in the finish product before it is handed over to the client/contractor for closing. This stage always starts with the inspection of all trim and walls for imperfections that may cause the finish product to suffer. Once all the walls have been checked and the repairs of imperfections done, they apply the last coat of fresh paint and walk out so that the client/homeowner can walk in.
Moncton Headstart (Day of Caring)

This year, for the "Day of Caring", Moncton Headstart got a pleasant surprise from Asurion. They agreed to send 40, yes Forty, of the their staff over for one full day to help with anything around the property. Clare, Director of Moncton Headstart, decided that the exterior of the building was in dyer need of some painting. Of course, Clare doesn't venture down the painting trail very far without first consulting us. The phone call came and Clare asked if PrimeX could supervise the volunteers, who would, in one working day, tackle the entire exterior of the building. My first reaction...No Problem! Let's do it! I told Clare I'd supervise, bring a couple of employees and take care of business...Well, did I ever underestimate the magnitude of managing 40 people with no painting experience. Thank goodness we had 40 of them...We started at 9am and by 4pm had 30 gallons of paint on the walls and the building finished...I was spent from my constant walk around the building and Clare was delighted at the outcome. Who knew, with a little guidance, 40 novices painted a whole building. I loved the experience and would love to do it all over again...Oh, and I also made it a point of learning all 40 names of the volunteers by days end...Mission accomplished!

Church (Campbellton)

It's been quite some time in the making, but it finally seems like the proper pieces to the puzzle are in place and we are heading up to Campbellton in the Fall/Winter of 08 to tackle the painting project of St-Thomas Aquinas Church. We'll be putting together a crew of four people to make the trip up and hire another two locals to help with some heavy lifting. We are hoping to have the project wrapped up within a two week period. The early stages of the project will be the most important as we engineer our custom platform. This part will be managed by Ben Legacy, my father, and responsible foreman for all structures in these types of projects. The platform will allow us to implement our time saving strategies and minimize the inconvenience of the project duration on the Church.

Below is a picture of the Church. We are all looking forward to this project...Should be a great challenge and great fun!

Children's Charity Classic

What can I say, it was a great day all around on the Course...We put this star studded team together on a whim (we wish!) and headed out to tackle the 18 hole course (Moncton Golf and Country)...Unfortunately for us, the course proved to be more of an opponent than we thought, but we did end up shooting a respectable 3 under. Led by the "strong like bull" drives of Dan Martell, the ferocious short game of a Pierre Martell, the consistency and all around savvy golf knowledge of Gair Maxwell and of course, myself, the fearless leader, chosen to lead off every hole to remove pressure from my teammates.

Although, the real pleasure was being out in the hot sun and knowing we were supporting a great cause in the children of Moncton Headstart. We, as a company, have participated in this event for several years now and can honestly say it is always run in the most organized and professional manner. Clare Archibald and her staff deserve a serious round of applause every year for this.

Well, that's it for this year at the Charity Classic, next year will be coming soon enough and we'll be ready.

Below is a shot of the boys at the PrimeX sponsored hole!

looking great!

Paint Knowledge

As we all know, painting is a pretty common home improvement topic. Although it is one of the simplest things you can do to improve the look of your house, it can be overwhelming when it comes to doing it right. I often find myself answering questions from clients and having to correct the advice they received from some of the big box stores. Be very careful when taking advice from a staff member at one of these stores. More often than not, they haven’t swung a brush for anybody but themselves. Some generic information can cause you extra time in labour and extra costs in dollars. Our advice is always free and always double checked for accuracy. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll find someone who does. And ultimately, you can bet that your trust in me is my utmost priority. Problems can range from product selection to tips on application. The most common mistake is often tied to the gadgets to use. Most of these self manifested "do it yourself" gadgets are not worth a dime if you want a quality job. We have tried and tested all different models and have found that they all fail in one way or another. The fact of the matter is, the painting trade still boils down to a person, a brush, a roller and a steady hand. That’s It!

Churches (St-Augustines)

What an interesting topic "Churches"! How'd that come about? Simple...We started in the business of painting churches in 2003 when St-Augustine's had a project open for painting their sanctuary. We placed a very aggressive bid knowing that the rest of the church would be up for tender within a few years. We wanted our shot, and well, we got it, and we nailed it! They were impressed enough to offer us a shot a bidding the remainder in 2005. We were up against two other local companies and ended up getting the contract. To date, it is our single biggest accomplishment and definitely our proudest. Not only did we do it right, but we did it fast. Armed with 7 employees and a game plan, we got things rolling on November 14th. We implemented our own systems and tackled it in a unique way. We put 200 gallons of paint on the walls and ceilings, cleaned up on the first Friday so that mass could be held on both Saturday and Sunday, started back on the following Monday and finished up on Wednesday the 23rd. We ended up totalling 700 man hours of production!
